Here's what happens when you have a friend who's a great photographer with a great camera:

Thanks, Dawn!

Katherine's animal sounds

Elisabeth refers to Katherine's noises as "her animal sounds."

Enjoys being held, not swaddled

A story about the quiets in response to touch milestone, recorded Mar 12, 2009

Katherine loves to be held, but she's not crazy about being swaddled. She has the most uncanny ability - already - to wiggle her arms out of the swaddle, regardless of how many layers or how tightly it is done. The trick with her, we're slowly learning, is to swaddle before she shows all the signs of tiredness, and then hold her while she mellows.

Turns head from side to side

A story about the lifts head when on stomach milestone, recorded Mar 12, 2009

We've been giving Katherine some "tummy time" every day to explore her little world in a different way. I thought that she would probably just lie there, and then start crying when she got frustrated that she could hardly move her head. So we were shocked when she first lifted up her head and turned to the other side and set it down at a week and a half. We've kept on giving her the tummy time, and she keeps on moving her head (although shes does get frustrated after a while).

Granddaddy's visit

by Graham // 0 comments // tagged with: Elisabeth, Katherine Mae, grandparents

We enjoyed a wonderful visit from Granddaddy this week. Elisabeth did all sorts of things with him.

The drew . . .

and played games

and practiced math facts

and explored the playground.

They did the slides together.

Elisabeth even convinced Granddaddy to follow her down the slide!

Of course, Granddaddy also had some quality time with his youngest grandchild.

What a wonderful visit!

Looking around

A story about the lifts head from adult's shoulder milestone, recorded Mar 11, 2009

by Graham // 1 comment // tagged with: Katherine Mae

I didn't expect Katherine to lift her head so much so early! She often lifts her head from one of our shoulders to look around. Perhaps I don't remember Elisabeth at this stage so well, but I don't remember her having such a strong neck.

Granddaddy loved holding Katherine, whom he nicknamed "enchilada" for the Ergo wrap in which we often carry her.

Didn't get the memo

A story about the keeps hands fisted milestone, recorded Mar 10, 2009

by Graham // 0 comments // tagged with: Katherine Mae

Apparently Katherine didn't get the memo that newborns are supposed to keep their hands fisted. She seems to like opening her hands and touching as much as having them in fists.

Resting on my shoulder

A story about the has minimal head control milestone, recorded Mar 8, 2009

Katherine has remarkable neck strength (at least as compared to my recollections of Elisabeth). She often holds her head up while on my shoulder, and during tummy time will sometimes turn her face from one side to the other - without banging her nose!

Who named your sister?

by Graham // 0 comments // tagged with: Elisabeth, Katherine Mae, Elisabethisms

Last night Elisabeth spent the night with our friends (who also happen to be our downstairs neighbors). I returned from the hospital at about 3:45am and crashed on the futon, and didn't see Elisabeth until her perky face roused me from slumber.

Since we hadn't divulged her sister's name to her before the birth, I asked her, "What do you think your sister's name is?"
"Kate!" she quickly replied.
"Very close," I said, "her name is Katherine Mae. Who do you think named her?"
"Mommy," Elisabeth replied.
"Who else?" I prompted.
"Aunt Kate?" she tried.
I tried a different tack: "Who do you think named you?"
"Mom and Dad!" she replied.
