Lessons in love

On Monday morning, Elisabeth's best friend, Zoe, moved to Illinois. Having lived in the same building for 2 years, they were almost inseparable. Zoe (and her family) will be sorely missed.

And that is perhaps what is most vivid to me in Elisabeth's grief. She loves and misses her friend tremendously. As I look back on our New York friendships, I can count over a dozen couples who have become solid friends . . . and have left the city. Perhaps my heart isn't as tender because it has happened so many times that we have had to bid farewell to people that we love. I am thankful that Elisabeth has formed and is forming such friendships, and pray that they will continue - like many of the friends who have moved away, with whom we still stay in close contact.

Planting season again

Today my neighbor, Mike, and I undertook to excavate, weed, and sow flowers (and a few vegetables) in the vacant lot behind our house. Of course, Elisabeth and Zoe were fearless helpers, handing us tools over the fence, getting more garbage bags, and fetching drinking water.

After we finished, I discovered that in April of 2008 Elisabeth and Zoe had partnered in another local revitalization.

The tree well in front of the brownstone adjacent to ours had been a rubbish bin. The girls planted pachysandra. It didn't survive, so we tried again.

Not much better the second time than the first. But last year we found the solution: zinnia.

This year we replanted the tree well with "cut and come again" zinnia, as well as three window boxes in front of the house! Who wouldn't want flowers in front of your house that you can cut for tables flowers!?

Floating mid-water

This was a great experiment at the American Museum of Natural History that can be easily duplicated at home. The kids each had a plastic Easter egg. They filled it with pennies and put it in the water. Their aim was to get just enough so that it floated halfway between the top and bottom (like a fish).Once they had succeeded, they put the same egg in a glass of saltwater to see how salinity affects buoyancy. What fun!

Elisabeth and her friends had a fantastic time jumping together on the paving stones.
